No support for Windows XP after April 8 2014!

Visual Steps XP-logo Windows XP has been extremely popular over the years and is still used by millions of people worldwide. But the operating system, first introduced in 2001, will soon be retired. Microsoft will offer no additional security updates or technical support for Windows XP after April 8, 2014. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer.

If you are using a computer that runs Windows XP, then our advice is to migrate to a newer version of Windows. Computers running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system so you can receive regular security updates to protect the computer from malicious attacks.

There are several options for migration. You can purchase:

If desired, you can visit a computer store and see what devices are available and at what price. The staff can inform you about the capabilities of the device and the pros and cons.

In all options, a step by step book from Visual Steps can certainly help with the transition. Below you can read more.

Do not take chances. Migrate now to a new version of Windows or switch to a different operating system.

If the computer is only being used for viewing websites, reading email and sometimes playing a game, then you might consider switching to a tablet. You can use a tablet to browse the Internet, send emails and play games but there are many other possibilities as well. Everything will depend on the availability of various apps. Apps are programs on a tablet.

The most common types of tablets are Apple's iPad and the Android tablets. For the iPad, the book iPad for SENIORS is an excellent choice. It explains in plain language everything you need to know about this popular, user-friendly device. You will learn at your own pace how to set up your iPad and all of the basic operations needed to use it. You will get familiar with the standard, pre-installed apps that let you surf the Internet, use email, keep a calendar or find a location on a map. In later chapters you will learn how to view photos, watch videos, take pictures, read e-books, and how to play music on the iPad. In addition, we also guide you on how to download new apps, for example, to play games, follow your favorite newspaper, get sports results, read recipes and more.

Android tablets
Android tablets are made by various vendors such as Samsung, Sony, Acer and Asus. The vendors can decide which version of Android they install on the tablet. The most common versions are currently Android 4.4, 4.3 or 4.2.
However, these tablets are not all the same in appearance. Each supplier can give the tablets they produce their own imprint which can make the home screens, for example, appear quite differently even though they may all be running the same version of Android. But overall, the apps work on the tablets in a similar way. Also, not all suppliers adapt their tablets. There are several vendors who install the 'basic' version of Android, such as the Asus Google Nexus.

The most popular tablets sold at the moment are those from Samsung's Galaxy series. If you are thinking of purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Tab 3 or Note, then the book Samsung Galaxy Tab for SENIORS is suitable. With convenient step-by-step instructions, you will quickly become familiar with a Samsung Galaxy Tab. You will learn all the basics needed to set up and operate the tablet. Next you will learn to work with apps to surf the Internet, use email, view photos, watch videos and play music. Instructions are also given on how to download and acquire new apps.
