Newsletter special on ePubs

Visual Steps logo More and more people are reading books these days on a tablet or e-reader. These types of electronic books are called eBooks or ePubs (that's short for electronic publication). Visual Steps has also published a number of ePubs. In this newsletter we will explain what an ePub is and give more information on how to buy and read ePubs.

What is an ePub?

EPub is just one of the various formats for electronic books. An ePub book (or eBook) has the file extension .epub. EPub files can be opened on different devices such as e-readers, tablets and smartphones and even on computers if a suitable application has been installed. The pages will adjust to the size of the device. The text of an ePub can be more difficult to read on a smartphone due to its smaller screen size, but you can usually zoom in by tapping or double-tapping the screen to make the text larger and more readable.
The advantage of ePubs is that they take up less space. This is especially handy when you go travelling. You don't need to carry all those heavy books in your suitcase anymore. You can easily bring your tablet or e-reader with a hundred or more books on it! Another advantage is that you can search in an ePub instead of flipping through page after page. And no trees are cut down for the pages of the book.

Where can I buy ePubs and how can I open them?

You can buy ePubs via different channels, for example the iTunes Store, Kobo Store, eBooks.com, Amazon and Barnes & Noble's online store. In the free guide Purchase an ePub from Visual Steps you will learn how to purchase an ePub and how to view it on your tablet. If you are using an iPad, the easiest way to get a new book is by purchasing it directly in the iTunes Store. For an Android tablet, you can use the Kobo app. Our handy guide explains step by step how to use these apps to acquire new books.

Once you have bought an ePub and it is downloaded to your device you can leaf through the pages easily by swiping across the screen. The app (program) used to read an ePub, for example iBooks on the iPad and iPhone, or Kobo on an Android tablet will often have a toolbar at the top or bottom of the book page. The toolbar can be used to change the settings, such as adjusting the font size and font style. You may also be able to adjust the screen for reading books in daylight or at night. When the toolbar disappears you can easily show it again by tapping the screen. The app remembers the page where you last stopped reading. When you start the app again, the book will automatically open where you left off. This happens even if you are reading multiple books at once. You can also manually add your own bookmarks as desired.

Visual Steps has also published ePubs. At the moment there are four ePubs available.

The ePubs from Visual Steps are suitable for tablets, such as the iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus and Kindle. Due to the large amount of screenshots and step-by-step instructions, the ePubs are not as suited for downloading onto a smartphone.

Once you have learned how to purchase ePubs by following the steps in the free guide Purchase an Epub you can explore the ePubs that are available from Visual Steps. On the website accompanying each ePub you can find information about the book, the table of contents and the online stores where you can buy the ePub. We think the easiest way to learn how to purchase an ePub is by following the steps in the free guide Purchase an Epub.

If you have your tablet nearby, and have already downloaded the free guide, you can follow the steps and download a new ePub right away onto your own device.

Arranging and finding folders and files on your Windows 7 computer!

If you have lots of documents on your desk, it may prove to be impossible to find the document you are looking for. You can use Windows Explorer, also called the folder window, to work with the files and folders on your computer. You can copy, delete, move, find, and sort files, among other things. Or you can transfer files and folders to a USB stick, an external hard drive, a CD, DVD or Blu-Ray disk. In this practical guide we will show you how to use the folder window, and help you arrange your own files.

Create a backup in Windows 7!

Creating backups (or safety copies) of files has become increasingly important for many computer users. A growing number of people save important and vital information on their computer. Often this will be business, tax or financial information, but it also can include photos and videos. Nowadays, lots of fond memories and unforgettable moments are recorded onto digital media with photo and video cameras.

A few years ago backups were usually created on storage media such as floppy disks, CDs, or DVDs. These types of storage media had one major disadvantage, in that you could only store a small amount of information on them. Larger backups soon required multiple disks, CDs, or DVDs. This all changed with the advent of the external hard drive. Nowadays it is also possible to save backups online.

It is wise to safeguard (or back up) your data at regular intervals. In case anything happens, you will still be able to retrieve important files. But before you create a backup, you will need to makes a few decisions. Do you need to create a full system backup, or is it better to copy the files yourself? What type of storage medium will you be using for your backup and where are you going to store it to keep it safe? You can create a safety copy of (all) your data and restore it to your computer if this becomes necessary. But you can also copy a number of files yourself. This can be useful if you want to display a series of photos or videos, for example, on another computer.

Topics covered in this book:

  • external hard drive
  • creating a backup in Windows 7
  • creating a backup of your bookmarks and email
